A Heartfelt Farewell
On June 14th, Alan Jedla passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones. His departure represents a profound loss for everyone who knew him, particularly the ceramic community that he so passionately nurtured throughout the years.
Alan was more than just a master potter; he was a mentor, a creative force, and a beacon of support to many. His legacy will resonate with everyone privileged enough to learn and create alongside him.
Although I am not a direct descendant of Alan, I consider myself a product of his teachings. His mentorship, creativity, and entrepreneurial spirit shaped my journey. I could share countless stories about the impact Alan has had on my life over the past 25 years.
My Journey with Ceramics
My love for ceramics began in high school. Later on, I discovered a studio called Fire and Mud, where I was a member for seven transformative years. This studio was alive with vibrant personalities, and one of its key figures was Alan. He was always present—mentoring, teaching, and working passionately with clay.
Fast forward to 2007: Fire and Mud faced challenges and had changed hands multiple times. One day, I received a call from Alan. He said, “The studio is finally shutting down. I'm informing everyone to come pick up their things.” I was heartbroken; there was nothing else like it in South Florida.
Upon arriving, Alan greeted me. He casually mentioned, “If we had a fearless leader, there’s nothing a lot of us wouldn’t do to keep this going—to maintain a creative space for everyone.”
Propelling the Studio Forward
Alan planted a seed that night. I couldn’t get the thought out of my head. Eventually, I told myself, “What the hell—who better to move forward with than people like Alan?”
Eighteen years have passed, and the studio is not just surviving; it is thriving. It has found a forever home, all thanks to Alan. His creative roots continue to nurture a lively community of artists and potters.
Alan’s legacy doesn't stop with those of us who worked beside him; it also lives on in his cherished family. His wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren reflect his spirit daily. Moreover, he touched many hands, shaped countless pieces of clay, and warmed countless hearts.
Celebrating His Life
On Saturday, July 26th, 2025 from 4pm- 7pm ; we will gather to honor the life of Alan Jedla—a man who deserves nothing less. We invite everyone who knew and loved him to join us for this significant occasion. It will be an opportunity to remember the joy, wisdom, and artistry he shared so generously with our community.
This gathering will affirm the lasting mark he left on our lives. Through sharing stories, laughter, and perhaps even the clinking of ceramic mugs raised in his honor, we will keep his spirit alive.
Remembering a Great Mentor
As we reflect on Alan Jedla's life, it's essential to cherish the legacy he leaves behind. His mentorship, creativity, and supportive spirit continue to inspire our journeys in ceramics.
His belief in nurturing a creative space for all serves as a guiding light. Together, let us celebrate our shared experiences, honor his wisdom, and remember the pivotal role he played in shaping so many lives.
Goodbye, Alan. You will always be a part of our artistic family. We will continue to mold and shape our dreams, just as you shaped the clay.
