The difference between ceramics, pottery, hand building and sculpture?
Ceramics encompasses all forms of working with raw clay, whether it is hand-building, wheel-throwing or sculpture. Pottery is typically used to refer to people who use the wheel to make ceramics work. But you don't have to use a potter's wheel to make functional work; you can do coil pots and pinch pots as well. Hand building encompasses using slabs, coils and pinching the work to create your pieces. Sculpture involves taking a large chunk of clay and removing parts of it to make people faces. This is how the names sculpture, hand building and pottery are typically used to describe working with clay, but they are interchangeable because you can use all techniques in your work.
Do you teach children?
Yes we do! Ceramics and art are fun and should be shared with kids. They use the clay and their creativity to make something from nothing; it is a powerful learning tool. It is also a great tool to use to teach kids patience. We teach kids pottery arts and crafts handbuilding or wheel throwing classes regardless of age and offer wheel classes to kids that are 9 years old and up.
Do you teach adults?
Yes we do! Pottery is an amazing hobby that requires patience and time. If you give yourself enough of both it can be extremely gratifying. In our adults pottery arts and crafts hand building or wheel throwing class we teach either wheel throwing or hand building. People's abilities vary, some people are amazing throwers and others are amazing hand builders. You just have to find your niche!
Four of us want to take classes; can we book a special time for just us?
Yes you can! Mud is best shared in the presence of others. We can do a special class series for you and your friends, depending on the days and times you require and the availability of our teaching staff. Contact us to set a schedule.
Can we bring wine and cheese for our class?
Yes you can, as long as you drink responsibly and, of course, share the wine with us.
Do you teach home schooled kids?
Yes we do. In fact we take groups of home schooled kids together to learn, interact and socialize.
Do you Work with Boy and Girl Scouts to Help them get their Merit Badges?
Yes! Another great thing that we do is teach Girl and Boy Scouts the fine art of handmade and wheel throwing pottery in a Merit Badge Clinic. We're certified by the South Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America as a Merit Badge Counselor and teach comprehensive boy|girl scouts pottery and glass fusing merit badge classes to Boy and Girls Scouts of all ages and their family members at reduced
prices.
Do you offer private classes?
Yes! We like to accommodate everyone; however, we don't always have the teachers available. So, depending on your schedule requirements, a special class extra fee might apply.
I want to try it out for a day without joining a 4 week class, can I do this?
Yes! Instead of taking the 4 sessions, we can reduce it to one. This instructed session will be $50 plus $5 for each piece you decide to keep. If you choose to continue with the 4 classes, we will credit you the $50 towards your regular class.
I want a place to work with clay; can I rent space at your studio?
Yes you can access our facilities for a day or join a monthly membership plan - see our open access pottery art membership studio program.
Can I use your kiln to bisque and glaze fire my pieces?
Yes, we charge by the cubic inch and depending on whether it is low fire or high fire. You can pay by the piece or rent the kiln. Kiln rental is $50 for low fire bisque or $65 for high fire. We can accommodate pieces as large as 25" x 28".
Can I buy artwork from your potters?
Our potters love their work, but they also need
help to pay for clay and materials, so they display their artwork at
our studio and sell their pieces to the public at prices well below
retail. The selection and variety is vast, so come over and check out what is currently on our shelves. You can commission custom-made pottery and glass artwork or buy handmade dichroic jewelry and ceramic pieces directly from the artists that made them.
Can you make something special to commemorate my spouse's birthday?
Sure, we can do just about anything in clay that you can think of :). We can make something perfect and unique for your loved one. Send us a sketch of what you want
and we will hand build it for you. If you do not have a sketch, our
artists can help you develop an idea! Contact Us to discuss your project and ideas.
Can I buy clay and pottery tools from you?
Yes, we supply white, red, porcelain and speckled clays from Axner, Highwater, Standard, or Minnesota Clay. We also sell pottery wheels, electric kilns, DooWoo pottery tool kits and a small selection of specialized pottery tools.
Do you do raku firing?
Ahhh raku! My favorite friend.... Sadly we are not currently doing raku because we are in the market for a kiln. We have a wonderful yard space with plenty of room for firing! I hope that by August we will host our first raku firing. If you have a raku kiln and want to lend it to our studio please let me know, we can make some accommodations for it.
Do you have another studio outside of Hollywood Florida?
Sadly, the pottery studio business is getting more and more expensive and a lot of studios are closing in the South Florida area like Joe Picasso's of Las Olas Boulevard and Miami Clay. Such a shame. Needless to say we are just a lonely little pottery studio in South Florida looking for people to join us in supporting a timeless art and hobby.
What can I make out of ceramics?
Since I am a functional pottery person I would go ahead and list here cups, mugs, bowls, boxes, jars, butter jars, vases, pitchers, tea pots, demitasses, goblets... It is such a very, very long list. Going into some of the other side you can make wind chimes, mosaics with your own handmade tiles, garden sculptures, water fountains, vegetables, minerals people and animals sculptures , etc. ;). I think I could just go on for hours, but I think you get the idea.
I broke a treasured ceramics piece; can you fix it?
Such a pity, I am sorry to hear about this. We can try to fix it, but can't really offer any guarantees until we look it. You can visit us most evenings and we can take a look at it for you and give you an estimate repair price then.
Can I host a ceramics party at your studio?
PARTIES! We love parties, especially when it involves family and friends. We host ceramics, glass fusing and paint your own pottery day of fun parties for adults and kids at our studio. Call us at (954) 927-7300 to book one.
Do you host corporate parties?
Team building, team building! It's always about the teams. Yes, we host corporate events, but unfortunately the suit and ties will have to stay outside the studio since they will get dirty. Instead of sitting in the splash zone in the Miami Seaquarium you can sit in the mud zone at MIY Ceramics and Glass Studio.
Can you cater parties?
Yes, we can order food for you; we love Nina's pizza right around the corner from us. There is no pressure at the studio, just plain fun, so join us for a little mud and maybe a little cake, but not mud in the cake :).
Is ceramics a good hobby for retired people?
Well, this is a very serious question and it requires a serious answer..... DUH! Ceramics is a wonderful hobby for just about anyone who needs a little R&R from the rat race of life. Just about anyone who is friendly and can "reasonably" contain themselves and reasonably behave is welcome in the studio. We only require one thing: PATIENCE.... really, Patience Pays Only Three Minutes to Passing Zone..... maybe the mud zone for us.
Do you Teach Classes in other art forms?
We teach warm glass fusing arts and crafts classes and also lampworking|fameworking|hot glass torch beading art classes where you learn to use a gas torch to shape glass into beautiful beads and artwork.
