What is the difference between ceramics, pottery, handbuilding, and sculpture?
Ceramics encompasses all forms of working with clay, whether it is handbuilding, pottery, or sculpture.  Pottery is typically used to refer to people who use the wheel to make ceramics work.  But you don't have to use a potter's wheel to make functional work; you can do coil pots and pinch pots as well.  Handbuilding encompasses using slabs, coils and pinching the work to create your pieces.  Sculpture involves taking a large chunk of clay and removing parts of it to make people faces.  This is how sculpture, handbuilding and pottery are typically used to describe working with clay, but they are interchangeable because you can use all techniques in your work.

Do you teach children?
Yes we do!  Ceramics and art are fun and should be shared with kids.  They use the clay and their creativity to make something from nothing; it is a powerful learning tool.   It is also a great tool to use to teach kids patience. We teach all kids hand building and we reserve the wheel classes to kids that are 9 years old and up.

Do you teach adults?
Yes we do!  Ceramics is an amazing hobby, and it requires patience and time.  If you give yourself enough of both it can be extremely rewarding.  In our classes we teach either wheel throwing or handbuilding.  People's abilities vary some people are amazing throwers and others are amazing hand builders you just have to find your niche.

I have 3 friends who want to take classes; can we book a special time for just us?
Yes you can!  Mud is best shared in the presence of others.  We can do a special class series for you and your friends, depending on the times you require and teacher availability there might be an extra fee.

Can we bring wine and cheese for our class?
Yes you can, as long as you share and drink responsibly

Do you teach home schooled kids?
Yes we do.  In fact we take groups of home schooled kids together to learn.

Do you work with Boy scouts and Girl scouts for their badges?
Yes!  Another great thing that we do is to teach Girl and Boy scouts the fine art of handmade ceramics.

Do you offer private classes?
Yes!  We like to accommodate everyone; however we don't always have the teachers available, so depending on your schedule requirements a special fee might apply.

I want to try it out for a day without signing up for a 4 week class, can you accommodate me?
Yes!  Instead of taking the 4 session we can reduce it to one.  This instructed session will be $50 plus any pieces that you decide to keep.  If you choose to continue with the 4 classes we will credit you the $50 towards your ceramics class.

I want a place to work with clay; can I rent space at your studio?
Yes, we offer short term and long term memberships.  Please check out our
open studio membership program.

Can I buy artwork from your potters?
Our potters love their work, but they also need help paying for clay and materials, so they offer their artwork for
sale in our studio   The selection and variety is huge so you should come over and check out what is currently on our shelves. You can also commission (order) from our potters custom-made pieces for your home or business.

I want a special piece to commemorate my spouse's birthday; can you make something?
Sure, we can do just about anything in clay that you can think of :).  If you don't have any ideas, pass by and talk with us, we can make something perfect and unique for your loved ones.

Can I use your kiln to fire my work?
We charge by the cubic inch and depending on whether it is low fire or high fire.  You can pay by the piece or rent the kiln.   Kiln rental is $100 for low fire bisque or $130 for high fire.   We can accommodate pieces as large as 25" x 28".

Can I buy clay and pottery tools from you?
We supply white, red, porcelain, and speckled clays from Axner, Highwater, Standard, or Minnesota Clay.  We also have DooWoo pottery kits and a small selection of specialized tools

Do you do raku firing?
Ahhh raku!  My favorite friend....  Sadly we are not currently doing raku because we are in the market for a kiln.  We have a wonderful yard space with plenty of room for firing!  I hope that by August we will host our first raku firing.  If you have a raku kiln and want to lend it to our studio please let me know, we can make some accommodations for it.

Do you have another studio outside of Hollywood Florida?
Sadly, the pottery studio business is getting more and more expensive and a lot of studios are closing in the South Florida area like Joe Picasso's and Miami Clay.  Such a shame.  Needless to say we are just a lonely little pottery studio in South Florida looking for people to join us in supporting a timeless art and hobby.

What can I make out of ceramics?
Since I am a functional person I would go ahead and list here cups, mugs, bowls, boxes, jars, butter jars, vases, pitchers, tea pots, demitasses, goblets... It is such a very, very long list.  Going into some of the other side you can make wind chimes, mosaics with your own handmade tiles, garden sculptures, water features, people, animals, vegetables, or minerals ;).  I think I could just go on for hours, but I think you get the idea.

I broke a treasured ceramics piece can you fix it?
Such a pity, I am sorry to hear about this.  We can try to fix it, but can't really offer any guarantees until we look it. You can pass by most evenings when either Alan or Denise is in and we can take a look at it for you and give you an estimate price then.

Can I host a ceramics party at your studio
PARTY!  We love parties, especially when it involves family and friends.  We do both adult and kids
parties. Please call us to book one :).

Do you host corporate parties?
Team building, team building.  It is always about the teams.  Yes we host corporate events, but unfortunately the suite and ties have to stay outside the studio as they will get dirty.  Instead of sitting in the splash zone in the Miami Seaquarium you can sit in the mud zone and MIY ceramics studio.

Can you cater parties?
Yes, we can order food for you; we love Nina's pizza right around the corner.  There is no pressure at the studio just plain fun, so join us, for a little mud and maybe a little cake, but not mud in the cake :).

Is ceramics a good hobby for retired people?
Well, this is a very serious question and it requires a serious answer.... DUH!  Ceramics is a wonderful hobby for just about anyone who needs a little R&R from the rat race of life.  And well just about anyone who is friendly and can "reasonably" contain themselves and reasonably behave is welcome in the studio.  We only require one thing:  PATIENCE...  Really Patience Pays only Three Minutes to Passing Zone....   Maybe mud zone for us.
